What is a Nessler tube used for?

Researchers use Nessler tubes to visually compare and analyze liquid samples, particularly in colorimetric tests. The tubes are commonly employed in water quality testing to determine concentrations or to compare the color intensity of samples against a standard solution.

What is the difference between a Nessler cylinder and a measuring cylinder?

The primary difference between a Nessler cylinder and a measuring cylinder lies in their design and purpose. A Nessler cylinder is designed explicitly for colorimetric analysis, in which the color intensity of a liquid sample is visually compared to a standard.
It is typically a tall, narrow glass cylinder with uniform dimensions, which ensures consistent light passage through the liquid and improves accuracy in color observation.
On the other hand, a measuring cylinder measures and dispenses liquid volumes. It is wider than a Nessler cylinder and has graduated markings along its length for precise volume readings. A measuring cylinder is less suitable for optical comparisons but ideal for general laboratory use in measuring and mixing liquids.
