Synonym: β-D-Glucuronide glucuronosohydrolase
CAS Number: 9001-45-0
EC Number: 232-606-8
Enzyme Commission (EC) Number: 3.2.1.31
MDL Number: MFCD00130629
Application
The enzyme from patella vulgata is reported to be more effective in hydrolyzing opioid-glucuronides than the Helix pomatia, bovine liver and E. coli enzymes
β-glucuronidase is used as a reporter gene in GUS assays to monitor gene expression1.
Quality
Contains sulfatase activity which is inhibited by 0.1 M phosphate.
Unit Definition
One Sigma or modified Fishman unit will liberate 1.0 μg of phenolphthalein from phenolphthalein glucuronide per hr at 37 °C at pH 3.8 (30 min assay).
Biochem/physiol Actions
β-glucuronidase catalyzes the breakdown of complex carbohydrates. In humans it converts conjugated bilirubin into the unconjugated form, making bilirubin suitable for reabsorption2,3,4.
Optimal pH:
glucuronidase activity: 4.5 to 5.0
sulfatase activity: ~6.2
Inhibitors: D-glucuronic acid, D-galacturonic acid, D-glucaro-1,4-lactone
