Sulfuric acid or sulphuric acid, also known as oil of vitriol, is a mineral acid composed of the elements sulfur, oxygen, and hydrogen, with the molecular formula H2SO4. It is a colorless and oily liquid that is miscible with water at all concentrations. It is soluble in water with the release of heat. It is corrosive to metals and tissue. It has a role as a catalyst. On contact, it will cause wood and other organic materials to char, but it is unlikely to start a fire. Inhalation of low or high doses for long periods of time can result in negative health effects. It's used to make fertilizers and other products, as well as in petroleum refining, iron and steel production, and a variety of other uses.
