Synonym: Pancreatin from hog pancreas
CAS Number: 8049-47-6
EC Number: 232-468-9
MDL Number: MFCD00131789
Biochem/physiol Actions
Pancreatin will convert not less than 25 times its weight of potato starch into soluble carbohydrates in 5 minutes in water at 40 °C, will digest not less than 25 times its weight of casein in 60 minutes at pH7.5 at 40 °C and will release not less than 2 microequivalents of acid per min per mg pancreatin from olive oil at pH9.0 at 37 °C.
General Description: Pancreatin is a digestive enzyme produced by the pancreas and delivered to the small intestine for the hydrolysis of complex nutrients.2
Other Notes
Contains many enzymes, including amylase, trypsin, lipase, ribonuclease and protease. The National Formulary (N.F.) and the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) specify amylase, protease and lipase only.
Application
Pancreatin can be used to promote esophageal tissue loosening in patients with esophageal tumors. It has also been shown to induce tumor necrosis suggesting it may aid in treatment response of esophageal cancer. 1
Pancreatin from porcine pancreas has been used in a study to assess the treatment of pancreatic cancer with pancreatic enzyme therapy. It has also been used in a study to investigate the treatment of pancreatic exocrine insufficiency with enzyme supplements.
Contains: Lactose or sucrose as extender (The sucrose used might contain up to 3.25% starch.)
Storage Temp.: -20°C
