A small diffusible signaling molecule involved in quorum sensing, thereby controlling gene expression and affecting cellular metabolism in bacteria; appears later than shorter acyl chain AHLs in developing biofilms; stimulates the production of putisolvin, which in turn, inhibits biofilm formation.
