Michels Solution is used to preserve and transport specimens for examination in immunofluorescence studies. While not a fixative, specimens can be held at room temperature for five days in transport medium before processing. This simple salt solution maintains pH, but does not kill most pathogens. Specimens received in transport medium should be washed in three changes of Michels Wash Solution (10 minutes for each wash). Not suitable for FISH studies.
