M 7 Hr FC agar is recommended for examination of water and waste water. This medium has an advantage over other media to yield results in 7 hours that are generally comparable to those obtained by the standard coliform method. Sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium deoxycholate inibits gram positive and gram-negative bacteria. Bromocresol purple and phenol red acts as pH indicators. Biopeptone and yeast extract provides nitrogeneous and carbonaceous compounds, long chain amino acid, vitamins and other essential nutrients to a wide variety of organisms. Lactose and mannitol are energy sources and sodium chloride maintains osmotic equilibrium of the medium. Faecal coliform such as Escherichia coli form yellow colonies, indicating lactose fermentation. Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis are inhibited.
