Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is produced by multiple cell types, including monocytes, macrophages, and T cells and is involved in many defense mechanisms including the immune response, hematopoiesis, bone metabolism, and acute phase reactions. IL-6 promotes the proliferation of activated B-cells, acts as a B-cell differentiation factor, and stimulates the secretion of immunoglobulins. It also induces the differentiation of naïve T cells into TH17 effector cells.
