Erdosteine is a derivative of thiol, and is used in the treatment of chronic obstructive bronchitis, including acute infective exacerbation of chronic bronchitis. It consists of two blocked sulfhydryl groups, which are released following first-pass metabolism.

Application: Erdosteine has been used as a mucolytic to study its protective effects on interleukin-1ß-stimulated inflammation in rat chondrocytes in osteoarthritis models.
Biochem Physiol Actions: Erdosteine is a mucolytic drug with expectorant and antitussive effects. Erdosteine is quickly metabolized in vivo to free thiols which act as free radical scavengers. Erdosteine has also been shown to have antioxidant activity through the activation of Nrf2-dependent antioxidant genes and inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
