Brilliant Green Sulpha Agar is recommended for isolation and detection of Salmonella species in food, especially eggs and egg products. The media is highly selective. Addition of 0.1% sodium sulphapyridine helps to increase the selectivity of the medium. Brilliant green acts as the inhibitory to gram-positive and most gram-negative lactose or sucrose fermenting bacilli. Sulphapyridine acts as the selective agent. Salmonella Typhi and Shigella fails to grow on the media.
