A tumor-inhibiting antibiotic that inhibits the glutamine-dependent amidotransferases involved in nucleotide biosynthesis, N-formylglycineamidine ribotide synthetase and glucosamine-6-phosphate isomerase; also inhibits the hexosamine biosynthetic pathway, which has been shown to protect against hyperglycemic endothelial damage.
