Zinc finger protein 189 (UniProt: Q8BKP2; also known as ZNF189, ZFP189) is encoded by the Zfp189 gene (Gene ID: 230162) in murine species. ZFP189 is a highly conserved member of the Krüppel-associated box (KRAB)-containing group of zinc finger proteins and is present in the nucleus of all cell types. It is involved in the regulation of transcription by RNA polymerase II. It contains 16 C2H2 type zinc finger domains and a KRAB domain at its N-terminal (aa 1-75) that is divided into box A and B. Box A is essential for transcriptional repression. Overexpression of Zfp189 gene in prefrontal cortical neurons is shown to preferentially activate gene network that is unique to resilience in mice. CREB is predicted to be its upstream regulator that binds to the zfp189 promoter. (Ref.: Lorsch, ZS et al. (2019). Nature Neurosci. 22(9); 1413-1423; Odeberg, J. et al. (1998).
