Biochem Physiol Actions: ZIC1 is a member of the Zinc finger of the cerebellum (ZIC) protein family and is referred as ZIC and ZNF201. The gene encodes zinc finger containing proteins that can bind proteins and DNA. It is a vital transcription factor with zinc finger domains implicated in the process of neural development. It is a novel tumor suppressor gene that plays a crucial role in vertebrate development. Methylation of this gene may be a promising biomarker for the diagnosis and prognosis of HCC and ovarian cancer (OC). It serves as a potential therapeutic target for gastric cancer. It is also involved in progression of human cancers, including medulloblastomas, endometrial cancers and mesenchymal neoplasms. It acts as a novel candidate tumor suppressor gene down-regulated through promoter hypermethylation in gastric cancer.
