Transthyretin (TTR) was previously known as prealbumin. It is tetrameric protein with molecular mass of 55kDa. It consists of two distinct dimer-dimer interfaces which form two identical funnel-shaped T4 binding sites.

Biochem Physiol Actions: TTR (transthyretin) protein is mainly involved in the plasma transport of both thyroxine and retinol (vitamin A) from bloodstream to brain. It is synthesized by the choroid plexus. It has characteristics of misfold and aggregate (amyloidogenesis) in vivo. Mutation in TTR gene is associated with the development of severe diseases such as familial amyloid neuropathy and Alzheimer's disease.
