Biochem Physiol Actions: ST6GALNAC1 (ST6 (a-N-acetyl-neuraminyl-2,3-ß-galactosyl-1,3)-N-acetylgalactosaminide a-2,6-sialyltransferase 1) is responsible for the synthesis of sialyl Tn (sTn) antigen, by transferring a sialic acid to a serine or threonine residue (Tn antigen), forming an a2,6-linkage to an N-acetylgalactosamine. The sTn antigen is a glycan associated with multiple cancers such as, breast, gastric, pancreatic, colorectal, ovarian, and other adenocarcinoma. It is highly expressed in such cancers, and this might be the outcome of abnormal expression of ST6GALNAC1.
