Biochem Physiol Actions: SST (somatostatin) functions by binding to the G protein-coupled receptor (somatostatin receptors). It is a peptide hormone which is produced in the hypothalamus, the gastrointestinal tract and the endocrine pancreas. SST inhibits hormone secretion and gastrointestinal function. In presence of glucose and amino acids, SST-14 is released from d-cells in pancreatic islets of Langerhans. It suppresses the secretion of insulin and glucagon. In the gastrointestinal tract, SST suppresses gallbladder contraction and reduces secretion.
