The gene SON encodes a DNA binding protein that is mapped to human chromosome 21q22. It encodes a large serine/arginine-rich protein that moves between the nucleus and the cytoplasm based on the phase of the cell cycle. The encoded protein spans a length of 2426 amino acids with domains similar to RNA processing factors.

Biochem Physiol Actions: The gene SON encodes a spliceosome-associated factor that is essential for proper processing of transcripts that are associated with microtubules, centrosome maintenance, and genome stability. It maintains the subnuclear organization of pre-mRNA processing factors in nuclear speckles and targets splicing and transcription in major pathways, such as integrin-mediated cell adhesion, cell cycle regulation, cholesterol biosynthesis, apoptosis and epigenetic regulation of gene expression. The gene is essential of mitotic progression and its loss results in mitotic delay. Deficiency of this protein leads to chromosome congression, compromised chromosome segregation and cytokinesis, which results in cellular aneuploidy and apoptosis.
