General description: The protein encoded by this gene is a cell membrane protein that may be involved in iron export from duodenal epithelial cells. Defects in this gene are a cause of hemochromatosis type 4 (HFE4). (provided by RefSeq)
Biochem/physiol Actions: Ferroportin - 1 (FPN1) is an iron exporter protein that is involved in the transfer of iron from the external and internal sites into bloodstream and thus maintains iron homeostasis. FPN1 exports iron mostly from macrophages and enterocytes, also from hepatocytes. FPN1 is also known to transfer iron from placenta to the fetus. FPN1 is posttranslationally regulated by hepcidin and is ultimately degraded. Mutation in the gene results in the accumulation of iron in macrophages and intestine and subclinical anemia, leading to ferroportin disease.
