Sigma non-opioid intracellular receptor 1 (SIGMAR1) is a 223-amino acid protein that is present in the endoplasmic reticulum and plasma membrane. The gene encoding it is localized on chromosome 9p13.1-p13.3.

Biochem Physiol Actions: Sigma non-opioid intracellular receptor 1 (SIGMAR1) acts as a ligand-regulated molecular chaperone. It interacts with ion channels and G-protein coupled receptors. Studies have shown that SIGMAR1 inhibits the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the liver, lungs and retina. Mutations in the gene encoding SIGMAR1 have been associated with juvenile amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
