Biochem Physiol Actions: MINA (MYC induced nuclear antigen) gene encodes an oxygenase that functions as a histone lysine demethylase and a ribosomal histidine hydroxylase. It catalyzes the demethylation of trimethylated Lys-9 on histone H3 (H3K9me3), which results in an increase in ribosomal RNA expression. It functions in mammalian cell proliferation and cell growth. MINA catalyzes histidyl hydroxylation of Rpl27a, a ribosomal protein. It is associated with the development of cancer and its expression has been observed in human lung cancer tissues. It may serve as a prognostic marker for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.
