General description: The protein encoded by this gene is a triacylglycerol lipase that mediates triacylglycerol hydrolysis in adipocytes. The encoded protein, which appears to be membrane bound, may be involved in the balance of energy usage/storage in adipocytes. (provided by RefSeq)
Biochem/physiol Actions: PNPLA3 (patatin like phospholipase domain containing 3) involves lipogenic transacetylase activity. Variation in PNPLA3 (patatin like phospholipase domain containing 3) is known to increase the fat content of hepatocytes, thereby promoting the severity of nonalcoholic liver disease. The gene is found to be associated with hepatic steatosis, liver fibrosis and cancer. PNPLA3 might be involved in energy homeostasis.
