Biochem Physiol Actions: Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF, MMIF and GIF) is a protein encoded by the MIF gene in humans and is mapped to chromosome 10. It is a potent cytokine that plays an important role in the regulation of immune responses. It acts as an integral component of the host antimicrobial alarm system and stress response that promotes the pro-inflammatory functions of immune cells. It is implicated in the pathogenesis of sepsis, and inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. It may also be implicated in both types of diabetes.
