MBNL2, also known as Muscleblind-like protein 2, Muscleblind-like protein 1, Muscleblind-like protein-like, or Muscleblind-like protein-like 39, and encoded by the gene MBNL2/MBLL/MBLL39/MLP1, is a protein that mediates pre-mRNA alternative splicing regulation. MBNL2 acts either as an activator or repressor of splicing on specific pre-mRNA targets. For instance MBNL2 inhibits cardiac troponin-T pre-mRNA exon inclusion but induces insulin receptor pre-mRNA exon inclusion in muscle. MBNL2 may also regulate ITGA3 expression by transporting it from the nucleus to cytoplasm at adhesion plaques. MBNL2 appears to play a key role in the muscle disease named myotonic dystrophy pathophysiology. MBNL2 is expressed in the nucleus of cells in multiple tissues but can be found in the cytoplasm in certain situations. In particular it is found in the cytoplasm in adhesion plaques.
