LDLR (low density lipoprotein receptor) is a transmembrane protein, which is composed of five structural domains- a ligand binding domain (LBD) in the N-terminal, an EGF (extracellular growth factor)-like domain, a small glycosylated domain, a transmembrane domain and a cytoplasmic domain present in the C-terminal, which is involved in localization and endocytosis of the LDLR.

Application: All Prestige Antibodies Powered by Atlas Antibodies are developed and validated by the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) project (www.proteinatlas.org)and as a result, are supported by the most extensive characterization in the industry. The Human Protein Atlas project can be subdivided into three efforts: Human Tissue Atlas, Cancer Atlas, and Human Cell Atlas. The antibodies that have been generated in support of the Tissue and Cancer Atlas projects have been tested by immunohistochemistry against hundreds of normal and disease tissues and through the recent efforts of the Human Cell Atlas project, many have been characterized by immunofluorescence to map the human proteome not only at the tissue level but now at the subcellular level. These images and the collection of this vast data set can be viewed on the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) site by clicking on the Image Gallery link. Biochem Physiol Actions: In liver and peripheral tissues, LDLR (low density lipoprotein receptor) plays a predominant role in the internalization of LDL and VLDL (very LDL) remnants. It internalizes circulating LDL and VLDL in endosomes, which is then degraded by lysosomes, whereas the receptor is recycled to cell surface. Polymorphisms in this gene are linked with familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH), which is an autosomal dominant disease, where the patients have elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C).
