Biochem Physiol Actions: LBP (Lipopolysaccharide-binding protein) gene encodes a protein that binds to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on the outer cell wall of gram-negative bacteria. The expression of this gene is upregulated when there is sepsis. It is a 58kDa protein that is synthesized in the liver and released into the bloodstream upon bacterial infection. It binds to LPS along with bactericidal permeability-increasing protein (BPI) by interacting with the CD14 receptor. It is involved in the regulation of LPS-dependent monocyte responses. It is a member of lipid binding proteins that are structurally and functionally related. These include BPI, plasma cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP), and phospholipid transfer protein (PLTP).
