Lysine-specific demethylase 5D (UniProt Q9BY66; also known as H-Y, Histone demethylase JARID1D, Histocompatibility Y antigen, Human homolog of selected mouse cDNA on Y, Jumonji/ARID domain-containing protein 1D, Jumonji AT rich interactive domain 1D (RBP2-like), Protein SmcY, SMC homolog Y chromosome, Smcy homolog Y-linked) is encoded by the KDM5D (also known as HY, HYA, JARID1D, KIAA0234, SMCY) gene (Gene ID 8284) in human. JARID1D/KDM5D is a histone demethylase that specifically catalyzes the demethylation of tri- and di-methylated Lys4 of histone H3 (H3K4m3 and H3K4m2), but not methylated H3K9, H3K27, H3K36, H3K79, H4K20, or monomethylated H3K4. The KDM5D gene is mapped to the azoospermia factor (AZF) region known to be involved in spermatogenesis.
