The gene IZUMO1 (izumo sperm-egg fusion 1) is mapped to human chromosome 19q13.33. The gene is conserved in mammals. The encoded protein is a sperm specific membrane bound protein. The protein has a signal peptide, a rod-shaped four-helix bundle (4HB), immunoglobulin-like domain, transmembrane region and a cytoplasmic tail. IZUMO1 is required for gamete recognition and sperm oocyte adhesion.
