Biochem Physiol Actions: The gene HSPA12B (heat shock 70kD protein 12B) encodes a 70kDa heat shock protein that contains an atypical ATPase domain and belongs to the HSP70 family of proteins. Its expression if found to be high in atherosclerotic lesions and may be involved in susceptibility to atherosclerosis. It is also expressed in endothelial cells and may function in angiogenesis via interaction with angiogenesis regulators. It may be a potential therapeutic target for angiogenesis-related diseases. Overexpression of HSPA12B may have a protective effect against cerebral ischemia that is mediated though a PI3K/Akt-dependent mechanism.
