Biochem Physiol Actions: HEG1 (Heart development protein with EGF-like domains 1) is a novel transmembrane protein. It is localized in the endocardial layer of the heart, endothelial cell (EC) junctions. It is involved in the aberrant vascular development and cardiac dilatation. In EC junctions, it directly interacts with the hydrophobic pocket of Krev interaction trapped 1 (KRIT1) to develop heart and vasculature through a common pathway. It is associated with the cerebral cavernous malformations (CCM1/KRIT1, CCM2, and CCM3).
