Biochem Physiol Actions: GABPA (GA binding protein transcription factor, a subunit 60kDa) gene encodes a transcription factor that is an ETS-related DNA-binding protein. It binds to purine rich repeats (GA repeats). The protein is capable of forming heterodimers with other polypeptides and is linked to Down's syndrome. The gene is mapped to human chromosome 21. The expression of this protein induces the re-entry of quiescent cells into the cell cycle. Defects in this gene leads to inhibition of entry of cells into S-phase and its down regulation is involved in DNA synthesis and degradation of CDKIs (cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors).
