ERLIN1 (ER lipid raft associated 1) is a member of the prohibitin protein family, and contains the ~160 amino acid long prohibitin-homology domain (PHB). It has a molecular weight of ~40kDa. It exists in association with lipid rafts, and is found in the ER (endoplasmic reticulum). ERLIN1 mRNA is expressed in a wide range of human tissues. This protein contains a transmembrane N-terminal, which is responsible for targeting this protein to the ER, and a C-terminal containing the SPFH (Stomatin, Prohibitin, Flotillin, and HflC/HflK) domain, projecting into the ER lumen. ERLIN1 forms a hetero-oligomeric complex with ERLIN2, with which it shares high sequence homology.

Application: All Prestige Antibodies Powered by Atlas Antibodies are developed and validated by the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) project (www.proteinatlas.org)and as a result, are supported by the most extensive characterization in the industry. The Human Protein Atlas project can be subdivided into three efforts: Human Tissue Atlas, Cancer Atlas, and Human Cell Atlas. The antibodies that have been generated in support of the Tissue and Cancer Atlas projects have been tested by immunohistochemistry against hundreds of normal and disease tissues and through the recent efforts of the Human Cell Atlas project, many have been characterized by immunofluorescence to map the human proteome not only at the tissue level but now at the subcellular level. These images and the collection of this vast data set can be viewed on the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) site by clicking on the Image Gallery link. Biochem Physiol Actions: ERLIN1 (ER lipid raft associated 1) is differentially expressed in activated and non-activated dendritic cells (DCs), and might play a role in the activation of DCs. ERLIN1/ERLIN2 complex is involved in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) associated degradation (ERAD) of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) receptor, post IP3-receptor activation. Variants in the ERLIN1-CHUK-CWF19L1 gene cluster are associated with simple steatosis and hepatic steatosis with inflammation. Thus, this cluster might influence the susceptibility to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). ERLIN1 regulates and inhibits sterol regulatory element binding proteins (SREBPs) during cholesterol sufficiency, and therefore, contributes to cellular cholesterol homeostasis.
