Biochem Physiol Actions: Receptor tyrosine-protein kinase erbB-2 is a protein tyrosine kinase that is encoded by the gene ERBB2. It belongs to the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor family. The protein lacks a ligand binding domain and requires co-receptors for ligand binding. It functions as a transcriptional regulator by binding to cyclooxygenase enzyme COX-2 gene promoter. Overexpression of this gene has been observed in several types of cancer including breast and ovarian cancers. ErbB-2 enhances the EGF and NDF induced tyrosine phosphorylation of other ErbB family of receptor tyrosine kinases.
