Biochem Physiol Actions: ELK3 (ETS-domain protein) gene encodes a protein belonging to the Ets oncoprotein family. It is localized to human chromosome 12q22-q23. It functions as a transcriptional repressor under basal conditions. It is downregulated in hypoxia and is involved in the regulation of several genes, including c-fos, vascular endothelial growth factor, egr-1 (early growth response protein 1) and HIF-1a (hypoxia-inducible factor 1-a). It forms a ternary complex with Elk-1 and Sap-1 transcription factors and plays a role in early response of quiescent cells to growth factor stimulation. It also functions in angiogenesis.
