Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a vasodilator that belongs to the calcitonin family of peptides. It is produced by motor neurons of peripheral and central nervous system. There are two forms of CGRP, a and ß, which exhibit similar functions. The effects of CGRP are mediated by G-protein coupled receptor heterodimer formed by calcitonin-receptor-like receptor (CRLR) and receptor-activity-modifying protein 1 (RAMP1). Several biological effects of CGRP are observed in nervous, endocrine, immune and cardiovascular systems. Multiple studies have implicated CGRP in the pathophysiology of migraine and antagonists to CGRP are being explored as treatment options Monoclonal Anti-Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide (CGRP) recognizes rat a-CGRP. The antibody cross-reacts with human and dog a- and ß-CGRP.
