Biochem Physiol Actions: Amine oxidase, copper containing 3 is an enzyme encoded by the AOC3 gene in humans. It is a copper-containing SSAO (semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase) secreted by vascular smooth muscle cells, adipocytes and endothelial cells. It is a human endothelial sialoglycoprotein whose cell surface expression is induced under inflammatory conditions. It is a novel adhesion molecule with dual function. It is a proinflammatory protein that helps in mediating leukocyte recruitment through its semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase (SSAO) activity. It also participates in inflammation and catalyzes the breakdown of amines to produce aldehyde, hydrogen peroxide and ammonia. Elevation of its activity is observed in atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus and obesity.
