Biochem Physiol Actions: ACO1 (aconitase) has dual roles. In iron-limiting conditions, it behaves as an RNA binding protein and controls the expression of genes involved in uptake, sequestration, and utilization of iron. In addition, it binds with a [4Fe-4S] cluster and functions as an enzyme which interconverts citrate and isocitrate. SIRT3 (NAD-dependent protein deacetylase sirtuin-3, mitochondrial) controls iron metabolism in cells and cancer growth by suppressing ACO1.
