Found in the lipid A part of LPS and useful as chemical marker of endotoxins; accumulates during long-chain 3-hydroxy-acyl-CoA dehydrogenase and mitochondrial trifunctional protein deficiencies, inducing oxidative stress and leading to mitochondrial bioenergetics deregulation and eventual multi-organ dysfunction.
