Optimizing Efficiency Within the PCR Workflow

Discussing the importance of maintaining an efficient, error-free workflow when performing PCR testing.

The PCR workflow is a critical part of many scientific and laboratory procedures. In order to ensure accurate results, it is essential to maintain a high level of efficiency throughout the process. There are several key steps that can be taken to optimize efficiency within the PCR workflow.

One of the most important things to remember is to use quality control measures at every stage of the process. This includes using only sterile and clean materials, as well as ensuring that all instruments are properly calibrated. Additionally, it is important to follow established protocols carefully and avoid shortcuts that could lead to errors.

Concurrently, streamlining the process as much as you can is crucial. This includes using automation wherever possible and eliminating unnecessary steps. Additionally, it is important to make sure you're set up for success in order to keep the workflow running smoothly - so before you begin, take inventory of all supplies, equipment, and instruments and make sure you have enough of everything to get the job done without pausing.

It's also a good idea to review your goals and objectives for each of the 5 PCR workflow steps before you begin. The 5 steps are as follows:

  • Collection: The collection of biological samples from a patient or specimen. Methods vary based on the type of sample (saliva, blood, sputum, etc.)
  • Extraction: The isolation and separation of nucleic acids (DNA and/or RNA) from the collected sample, which will be used for PCR testing.
  • Amplification: "Cloning" specific segments of a nucleic acid sequence to create many more copies, thus improving testing accuracy.
  • Detection: The isolation and identification of pathogens or given conditions within the sample.
  • Storage: Having the proper equipment and processes in place to store samples over the long term for further research, or to store for transportation.
