A water-soluble receptor antagonist which targets both AMPA- and kainate-sensitive glutamate receptors (IC₅₀ = 0.15 and 4.8 µM, respectively); does not block the NMDA-sensitive glutamate receptor (IC₅₀ = ≥ 90 µM).
