Biochem Physiol Actions: Zona pellucida sperm-binding protein 4 (ZP4) along with ZP1, ZP2 and ZP3 interacts with the sperm as it makes the initial contact with the egg. This triggers many molecular processes which stimulate sperm acrosomal exocytosis (AE) that enables the sperm to penetrate the ZP. ZP4 also functions as an inducer of sperm motility and causes a change in the motility patterns.
