Biochem Physiol Actions: SALL3 (Sal-like 3) is a member of spalt-like gene family encoding a zinc finger protein. It is mainly involved in the developmental regulation. It is expressed in fetal brain and other human adult tissues. It plays a vital role in the CpG island methylation. The double zinc finger motif of SALL3 directly binds to the PWWP domain of DNA methyltransferase 3 a (DNMT3A) to reduce the DNMT3A-mediated CpG island methylation. It has been reported that SALL3 silencing increases probabilities of DNA methylation in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which indicates an important role in oncogenesis. Study has been reported that haploinsufficiency of SALL3 may cause 18q deletion syndrome.
