Taurocholate broth selectively supports growth of gram-negative coliforms from water, milk and other similar food products. The selective action of this medium is attributed to crystal violet and sodium taurocholate which inhibits most species of grampositive bacteria. Lactose is a fermentable carbohydrate. Neutral red is the indicator dye in the media. Lactose fermenters acquire pinkish red color due to production of acid. Sodium chloride maintains the osmotic balance at the medium.
