Bile Esculin Azide HiVeg™ Agar is used for selective isolation and presumptive identification of faecal Streptococci. It aids in differentiation amongst Enterobacteriaceae such as Klebsiella, Enterobacter, Serratia from other genera on the basis of esculin hydrolysis. This medium is prepared using vegetable defined peptones to avoid BSE/TSE risks associated with animal peptones. Clostridial HiVeg™ Agar is recommended for selective isolation of pathogenic Clostridia from mixed flora. Sodium thioglycollate and sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate acts as the reducing agents. Clostridium species grows luxuriantlly on the medium. The ideal method of inoculation of Clostridial Agar is direct inoculation of sterile, cooled medium with the specimen (in tubes). Alternatively agar plates of the medium can also be inoculated by streaking. This medium is prepared by replacing animal peptones with vegetable defined peptones to avoid BSE/TSE/GMO risk.
