Thomas® Wiley Mills are perfect for chopping fibrous and difficult materials. Introduced in 1925, Wiley Mills have been progressively improved since then, while retaining the same basic shearing action. These mills were originally designed for grinding fertilizer materials, animal hair, hoofs, etc. The hard, tool steel cutting edges on the knives allow milling of a wider range of materials, including plastics. The grinding chamber and delivery chute are sealed to minimize loss.

Thomas Wiley mills satisfactorily reduce many materials that cannot be reduced by other mechanical means. They are superior to crushing and abrasive milling for numerous materials due to the unique scissors cutting action. Stationary blades, mounted on a rotating cutting head, work against adjustable blades mounted on the circumference of the cutting chamber to generate a high shear rate from a motor of low speed. The chamber design produces a fan effect which greatly reduces temperature build up and moisture loss and helps prevent product deformation and gumminess that clog and reduce milling efficiency. Correct grinding occurs almost instantaneously when slowly feeding dry or degreased material while using the coarsest mesh screen. Smaller particle sizes with minimal degradation are readily achieved with a second pass through the mill using a smaller mesh screen.
