IPL-41 is a modification of Goodwin's original IPL formulation. It was developed by Weiss et al of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Insect Pathology Laboratory for large scale propagation of a cell line derived from fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda. Weiss supplemented the basal medium with fetal bovine serum and Tryptose phosphate broth and successfully grew the continuous cell line IPL-21 AE (III) in large volumes in polystyrene roller bottles.
IML006 is IPL-41 with calcium chloride. It does not contain L-glutamine. The basal medium also needs to be supplemented with fetal bovine serum. The medium is primarily used in growth and maintenance of cell lines derived from lepidopterans and propagation of viruses in these cell lines. The basal medium is also known to be used without serum supplementation for production of recombinant proteins in Spodoptera cells using the baculovirus expression system. Users are advised to review the literature for recommendations regarding medium supplementation and physiological growth requirements specific for different cell lines.
