Biochem Physiol Actions: Precursor of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB). It blocks dopamine release by blocking impulse flow in dopaminergic neurons. Pretreatment with gamma-butyrolactone allows detection of autoreceptor-induced dopamine release.
