The ED-5 provides the same advantages of the basic Wiley Mills. A variable speed, digitally controlled, direct drive, 1-hp cutting mill provides continuous variation of cutting speeds from 650 to 1140 rpm with constant torque maintained throughout the speed range. Safety features include a door proximity sensor coupled with a DC injected motor break for instant shut down. The Digital Variable Speed ED5 retains the shearing action of the Standard Model which results from four hardened steel knives on a revolving shaft working against four adjustable knives bolted onto the circumference of a 5" cutting chamber. The fan effect created minimizes changes in temperature rise, loss of moisture, liquefaction, contamination, etc., making this type of mill satisfactory for many materials which cannot be reduced by other mechanical means.
Features of the Digital ED-5:
Grinding Chamber: Of cast iron and steel, 127 mm inside diameter x 51 mm deep. Door provides full access to the chamber for cleaning. Four hardened steel knives, bolted to a removable rotor, are precisely adjusted for shearing clearance with four individually adjustable knives mounted on the frame. Fan action of the blades increases throughput and quick clearance of the chamber. Handwheels release the chute beneath chamber for replacement of sieves.
Sieves: Curved, round hole screens of stainless steel which are easily interchangeable and align automatically when inserted. Shim plates, in the form of curved frames, provided for use with screens.
Knives: Of tool steel, hardened and tempered for toughness and retention of cutting edge. Stainless steel knives are offered for use with corrosive materials and are regularly included with the stainless steel models 3379K41 and K44.
Hopper: Slide controlled, stainless steel, with stainless steel cover. Approximately 2.875” i.d. at top, tapering to 1.375” at bottom, 8” deep
Door: Handwheel clamping screw seals heavy steel plate door against the face of the mill. When released, door pivots on an aluminum bracket for full diameter access to the grinding chamber. Safety electrical interlock disconnects motor when door is open.
Receivers: Threaded collar at lower end of chute takes a standard Mason glass jar (6176B12), which permits observation of finished product and is convenient for storage. Collar is removable for attachment of a bag for sample collection. Grinding chamber overhang ensures easy interchange of receivers.
Drive Unit: 1-hp, heavy-duty motor. Louvered steel cabinet encloses motor with thermal overload cutout, rotor shaft ball bearing assembly and a storage compartment, approximately 254 W x 191 H x 203 D mm, for tools and sieves. Ball bearings are permanently lubricated and sealed. Hinged cover of cabinet provides easy access. Cabinet finished with smooth enamel for easy cleaning.
Dimensions: Overall 19" W x 26" D x 49" H (483 x 660 x 1245 mm); grinding chamber overhang approx. 7" (178 mm).
Stainless Steel Models: Mills 3379K41 and K44 are specially outfitted to resist corrosive materials. In these two models, all metal parts in contact with the sample are made of stainless steel. The knives are Type 440-C stainless steel and are slightly magnetized. Chamber dimensions are the same as in the regular models.
