TLC plates utilize a highly purified silica gel tht eliminates contamination of samples. Narrow particle size range reduces band spreading. Uniform layer thickness minimizes diffusion and enhances recovery of minute fractions. Silica gel on plastic or aluminum foil provides the same quality TLC surface but allows users to cut the plate to the desired size.
