DMEM was originally developed as a richer version of BME; with 4 times higher concentrations of amino acids, vitamins and some additional components than BME. DMEM is commonly used for the culture of normal and transformed cells.

Applications
DMEM is optimized and validated for stem cell culture. Recommended cell type hosts for culturing include: human, rat, mouse, monkey, hamster, chicken and fish cells. Recommended cell types include: primary fibroblasts, neurons, glial cells, HUVECs, smooth muscle cells, HeLa cells, 293, Cos-7 and PC-12 cells.
