Ready-to-use Brain-Heart Infusion medium (BHI) plates are used for culturing fastidious microorganisms, such as Neisseria spp. and Streptococcus spp., as well as non-fastidious anaerobic microorganisms. Brain heart infusion powder is derived from bovine or porcine brain and heart tissue, so it is a highly nutritious general-purpose growth medium. It is often used in food safety, water safety, and antibiotic sensitivity tests.
Typically, 100 mm round plates are for growth/selection, while 150 mm round plates are for screening. Rectangular plates can be used with automated systems. Grids can be helpful when counting colonies.
Contains 3.7% brain heart infusion powder and 1.5% agar, and is adjusted to pH 7.4.
